Not many predicted this match to end the way it did, especially considering the fact that Hull City had never beaten Manchester United in any top flight football game. But at the end of the game, the newly promoted Hull City were 3 points and 2 goals to be good.
Hull City scored both goals in the first half, all coming from their centre backs. Interestingly, Nigeria’s Super Eagles defender, Semi Ajayi opened the scoring for Hull in the 17th minute. This goal was so significant as it marked the first Premier league goal for Hull City after 9 years. Nobel Mendy scored the second goal in the 38th minute, after rising high to head in a cross, both goals coming from set pieces .
For United, this would serve as a wake up call, but for Hull City, it is a statement of intent, it shows how important they want to stay up, and securing all three points against a United side that finished in the top four last season, was a strong affirmation.
The game also witnessed the return of Marcus Rashford after a long loan spell at Barcelona last season. He was introduced early in the second half, but could not make any difference.
To be fair, United did have their chances, but Hull City’s goalkeeper was also briliant.
Coach of Manchester United Michael Carrick has said his side didn’t click on a difficult afternoon and that the defeat does not stop the long term project.
Is it too early in the season for any worries for united, or could this be early warning signs? Should United take advantage of the transfer window while it is still open? Or could this be one of those bad days that will pass?
