National Assembly Suspends Official Visits to South Africa

Nigeria’s apex Legislative Institutions have formerly suspended all official visits and legislative activities with South Africa following the continued attack on Nigerians living in South Africa by South Africans.

Spokesperson for the House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi issued the statement on Friday.

The leadership of the National Assembly from both chambers led by Senator Godswill Akpabio in the Senate and Hon. Tajudeen Abbas in the House of Representatives communicated this through the Clerk of the National Assembly, directing all Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members to suspend all visits to South Africa and boycott all legislative activities hosted by South Africa or in South Africa.

The move is in response to the continued xenophobic attacks by South Africans against Nigerians. In the past couple of weeks, Nigerians living in South Africa have been evicted in very harsh circumstances, forcing them to abandone their businesses and investments.

The Federal Government of Nigeria had sent warnings to South Africa about the ill treatment of Nigerians in South Africa, but inspite of that, the attacks on Nigerians have persisted, forcing the National Assembly to suspend all forms of legislative activities with South Africa.
