Federal Government to give 100mb Free Data to Students from October 1

The Federal Government says it will provide free 100mb daily data specifically for students to enable them access approved educational websites and digital learning platforms.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa made the announcement at the launch of the Initiative for Zero-Rated Acess to Educational Platforms and Content in Nigeria in Abuja.

The initiative which is set to begin from October 1, is spearheaded by the Nigerian Communications Commission in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education and Licensed Telecommunications operators in Nigeria.

The initiative is expected to cost approximately N 15 billion monthly or N180 billion annually.

Breakdown of the Cost and Program Details

  • Target Audience: Around 5 million students in public senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions.
  • Daily Allowance: 100MB of free data per student daily (valued at roughly N100 per student per day).
  • Monthly Cost: N100/day × ~30 days = N3,000 per student monthly (totaling N15 billion monthly for 5 million students).
  • Annual Cost: N180 billion annually (factored over a 13-month budget framework).
